The Project
Description of our project, as written down in the articles of our association:
1.1 The objective of the association is the promotion of education in Morocco as
defined in the UN Agenda 2030, goal 4: „Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning oportunities for all“
1.2 The main place of activity is the Atlas Mountains and the region of Marrakesch.
Mainly children and youths from poor families in rural areas are to be supported.
Support should be low-threshold, client orientated and in line with the local cultural
context.
1.3 The association is politically and confessionally neutral. The work in Morocco is
executed in due consideration of local customs with the main goal of being able to act independently.
Initial position
Access to education is not to be taken for granted in Morocco - especially in remote
areas. In mountain villages school often last no longer than six years. To be able to continue with senior classes, youths must put up with a long way to school. There is no regular transport plus traveling is expensive, and so is living in a boardinghouse were they could live during schooldays. Many families are poor, even living below the breadline. Even while receiving financial support from the government there is not enough money to cover all costs for education. Therefore, instead of enabling the youths to graduate, many families are finding it more practical to send the boys to work and keep the girls at home to do the chores or getting them to be married.
First project/shared flat for female students
In September 2023 a new phase of life started for some students. They moved from a mountain village to the city of Marrakesch to start their studies. For most of them a city is a very new experience. Everything is different, everything is new. „How does Google Maps“ work? Where is the bus stop? How do we enroll? Where do we find an affordable flat? How to apply for a scholarship?
Woooow, life in a city is expensive! How can I cope here? Questions upon questions… and no relatives around who could help.
This is where EDUCATION SUPPORT is ready to help. We rent a flat for the students, a safe and agreeable place to stay. We guide then young women while they are slowly getting started with life in a city. We accompany them into new territory, to places they haver never been before, such as elevators, trains - and buying the ticket online beforehand, thus encouraging a hands-on way of learning.
